Calling all Nations, Berlin

The Summers and Jake yesterday returned from Berlin, having performed at Calling all Nations, a huge gathering of Christians coming together from all over the world to worship God.

The Vertical Reality boys arrived late at night and spent the night sleeping in a bathroom and jake was outside under a ping-pong table, both very hard floors, but for the second night onwards they discovered an army surplus store and got some ‘roll mats’ (life savers - or back savers)

Thursday was a glorious day spent in the sun practicing their circus skills and getting to know some of the people involved with kings kids all around the world.

Friday was trip one to the Olympic stadium for a rehearsal with the psalm drummers and practicing positions on the track with king’s kids as well as becoming familiar with the transport systems of Germany. This also provided time for photos of the stadium and some juggling in the sporting palace.  Having VIP status allowed Vertical reality to have a browse around the interior of the stadium, dressing rooms etc and the famous ‘atrium’

The big day arrived, very early, a long journey across the capital for a final practice with the psalm drummers and then out to open the whole event, as we began the place filled drawing people in from the stalls outside, an amazing sound of 80 people passionately drumming to worship God. “One of the best 16 minutes of my life” and the drummers headed back up the marathon tunnel to a huge round of applause from the stadium and the dancers waiting to go out “I was filling up”

The VR boys along with their good friends Ben and Louise (there you go, said I’d get your name on here) chilled out and soaked up the worship and had a look round the outside of the stadium and all the stalls.

Time for a bit of juggling in the stadium, Vertical Reality’s boys ran out with kings kids and joined the English team who danced wonderfully and combined with the circus skills was a real winner, and ended with VR freestyling in the middle of the dancers, what a way to worship!

An unscheduled psalm drummers performance along with prophetic dancing from Louise took place near the south gate drawing a huge crowd and gaining a huge sale opportunity for the psalm drummers CD’s and merchandise, once again a fun, amazing and prophetic moment.

Unfortunately the psalm drummers were cut form the finale as time had over run so Vertical Reality joined kings kids again out on the track were they could do nothing but stand in God’s presence with 30,000 other people from around the world.

An amazing trip that Dave Dan and jake will never forget, the whole thing was amazing, and kebabs in Germany are so much better than in England, especially Blackpool!

Breakout '06

At the weekend Vertical Reality performed at MAYC’s Breakout event, which was held at Winter Gardens, Blackpool on Friday and Saturday night. The first night was a little worrying as a few audio and visual effects went astray, but the boys made the best of it and produced a show that was loved by the 300-400 people in the ballroom. The VR boys then participated in the techno worship using their circus skills.

After some glo Frisbee-ing Vertical Reality relaxed for the night at the Blackpool Hilton before making their way back to the Winter Gardens to run a circus skills workshop. In true Vertical Reality style, the boys engaged in an epic battle on the football field and defeated all enemies who stood in their way! Vertical Reality then took some time out to chill in the dressing room and a have a bit of fun including a strange game of cricket involving a broomstick and a tennis ball, before the evening event began.

The big show loomed: The winners of the battle of the bands opened the evening followed by thebandwithnoname who got the crowd pumping, next was Vertical Reality’s turn to entertain the 2500 young people. The boys performed their best loved routines including ‘windows’ and a new hi-energy version of ‘Freestyler’ to rapturous applause after every trick. From the beginning the audience loved it, joining in with songs, percussion and of course the participation videos of ‘Leppi’ produced by Freak Lizard Productions.

After Vertical Reality’s show many of the young people followed them out to buy signed merchandise that was for sale and many positive comments were made by young people and event officials alike; “The best I’ve seen for a long time”, “Amazing juggling”, “Great, just great!”, “That’s the best diaboloing I’ve ever seen” “You guys are awesome”.

Vertical Reality then spent one more night in the Hilton after trekking around Blackpool in the heavy rain in search of a kebab (which were pretty awful). On Sunday morning as VR returned to the Winter Gardens they we’re spotted by a large group of young people, and after a long signing session everyone was happy with the merchandise that they had purchased.

Vertical Reality on TV!!

Last week Vertical Reality had an interview with the BBC who were interested to know why Vertical Reality do what they do. It was rather strange, VR had a short practice and a discussion about who they are in their very own playful and weird way which the reporter thought was very funny.

The video can be seen here or on BBC interactive by pressing your red button!

Vertical Reality : The Show

Wow Wow Wow!!! What a night!!!

All day setting up, staging, lighting, sound, visuals, routine practices. All pretty stressful and tiring, and then we had to perform.

We had a slight (huge) scare about an hour before performance when the lights blew! We had overloaded the electronics or something technical like that... Anyhow our team were on hand to swiftly reconfigure and got them sorted with about fifteen minutes to go, phew!

The place was filling quickly and tension grew as the introduction began and the voiceover announced the presence of Vertical Reality

The window scene was a complete hit and loved by all!!!

Next- hip-hop scene, Matt, Eggy, Brummy and Tim set the scene with super slick diabolo skills, followed by the introduction of the crews from MC Stephenson. The battle got hotter and hotter with diabolo tricks, acrobatics and break dance; finally the crowd judged the slickest crew and they were awarded the honour of victory!

Yes we can juggle, and to prove it we did a nice bit of freestyle club action

Martial artists Jake and Dave took to the stage with their show stopping martial arts routine. The height of technique and power combined with comedy to produce one of the fan favourites.

My Spoon then performed a 20-minute set of their pop punky music as our hardcore fans blitzed the merchandise stall

After the interval Dave Summers, Dave Stephenson and Jake Mahal performed a spotlight percussion routine on the most bizarre drum kits you’ve ever seen.

The Grandstand was set; on to centre court appeared Roger Featherer and Bjorn Dork for a game of juggling tennis.

After a spot of audience participation and an auction for the last signed Vertical Reality spinning plate Dave and Jake were back were back with their second martial arts routine.

My Spoon returned for another great set, with members of the audience clambering onto the stage and moshing at the front!

To finish the night off was the famous glow show, Dave Stephenson kicking off with magical appearing lights then supported by the rest of the team sporting various glow paraphernalia for an awe inspiring effect.

Vertical Reality hit the stage one last time with some jaw dropping final tricks to say goodnight and take a bow before heading off to a merchandise sale and signing session!

The show was so much fun and adrenaline filled to be a part of and there will be many more to follow with more weird, wacky entertainment for all.

A big thank you to Freak Lizard Productions for the filming and video entertainment. We love you Leppi.

VR at Spring Harvest

Dave's of Stevo and Summers variety along with Jake and Dan have just arrived back from a week of working with 8-11 year olds at Spring Harvest in Skegness.  A programme packed full of silly games, worship and teaching couldn't have been the same without some input from the Vertical Reality boys.  Jake and Dan ran a circus skills workshop whilst the Dave's made some noise leading a percussion workshop, alongside prayer, dance (led by the one and only TBC), physical activity and brain teaser workshops from other members of the King's Kids team.  Vertical Reality also performed some routines up on stage, including Martial Arts, Music and Circus Skills.

"It's so awesome to see God move in the kids lives, to see them heal each other through prayer and having prophecy for each other is so ace. I feel honoured to lead children and bring them closer to God, and in doing so they bring you closer to him and remind you just what it is to be childlike, wow, lost for words"

Jake at night time was up to his antics around the camp site, playing with fire and amazing people with his sleight of hand, gathering a crowd in the skyline pavilion as an audience and walking around freaking people out by producing objects from their person.  Stevo was amazing people with his new found ability to seemingly glide across the floor where previously walking.

Hopefully Vertical Reality will be returning to Spring Harvest next year for more fun and to see God move in lives!!!

Ian at Leeds Uni

Over the Easter Holidays I (Ian) was given the opportunity to go on a maths taster course at Leeds University. And of course, I wouldn't go away without my diabolos. So on the last night I had a glo diabolo session for about 5 hours til the early hours, and entertained loads of students from up and down the country. I had a wicked time while I was there and it was great to catch up with some old friends. Well done to Leeds University for being a Fair Trade Uni. And hello to anyone I met who comes on this site!
